ARTS AND CRAFTS

The centre of Pezenas (reserved for pedestrians) is steeped in tradition and history. Strolling through the beautiful cobbled streets you will find numerous small shops selling all sorts of arts and crafts made by local artisans and designers. Perfect to decorate your home with the spirit of the South of France, as souvenirs or gifts.

ANTIQUES

Pezenas is well known for the number and quality of its antique shops.
Twice a year, the first Sunday of May and the second Sunday of October, their association organizes the “Grand déballage”, a large fair at the Brocante stretching for nearly a kilometer on the National 113.
More than 150 exhibitors are present all day.
Furniture, old linen, jewelery, tableware, paintings, trinkets, African art, watches, books, posters … the most diverse objects are to discover!

WINE TASTING & VINEYARD TOURS

Pezenas is literally surrounded by vineyards producing white, rose and red wines of increasingly good quality with distinctive characteristics of the south of France, including Picpoul de Pinet (which goes particularly well with the local oysters), the robust, earthy Faugeres red, and some superb biodynamic/natural wines that are produced in keeping with ancient traditions.
There are several wine fairs held in Pezenas itself in the summer (check the pezenas tourist office for details) and many of the local vineyards welcome walk-in visitors for tastings and direct sales. Regular wine tastings hosted by local wine makers every Friday evening in July and August at Course Jean Jaures.

OYSTERS

The local oysters from Bouzigues that are grown in the Thau lagoon (about 15 minutes drive from the convent) are delicious even in summer. You can enjoy them in small restaurants in front of the lagoon in Bouzigues, or in the neighbouring fishing villages of Sete or Meze.
Alternatively you can buy them directly from the producers most days at the market in the centre of Pezenas (five minutes walk from the convent) and bring them back to have in front of your apartment at the convent. Ask to have them opened for you and served on a platter, ideally with Picpoul wine.

CULTURE & FESTIVALS

There are regular exhibitions and cultural events held throughout the year in the old historic part of Pezenas  http://www.pezenas-tourisme.fr/ for details.
One of the highlights happens at the beginning of June – “Pézenas sous le regard de Molière “, a festival during which the old town comes alive when larger than life characters dressed in period costumes can be seen singing, dancing, sword fighting and generally enjoying themselves and entertaining passers-by.
This is followed in July by the “Mirondela des Arts” (http://www.mirondeladelsarts.com), a series of cultural, theatrical, musical and wine-related events and exhibitions.
Also look out for musical evenings taking place on top of the recently renovated “butte du chateau” in the centre of town.
Guided tours of historic Pezenas in English are available call Anita 00 33 (0)4 67 98 83 09. Email: a.franco@otpvh.fr

MARKET

There is a regular food and clothing market every Saturday morning 9am – 1pm in the city centre.

THEATRE

Pezenas was a regular base for France’s most famous playwright Moliere and his troupe, which explains why the town is often referred to as the “Ville de Moliere”. The “theatre de Moliere” puts on regular performances of his works both outdoors and inside the beautifully renovated original theatre. See http://www.illustretheatre.fr/

CYCLING

Biking is a great way to discover the local vineyards and countryside. You don’t even need to plan your route, all roads out of Pezenas lead somewhere interesting – as long as you can find your way back! Ask your hosts Sophie or Firas about where you can rent bikes.
